National JFON has just moved into our new office outside of Washington, D.C. We are located in Springfield, Va., just off the I-495 Capital Beltway, which encircles the metro area. We are located off the lobby of a large office building with plenty of free parking.
Throughout February and March, we have been dealing with the fun that comes with setting up a new physical office space. This has included negotiating a lease, setting up Internet and phone lines (which has been more complex than I had imagined), acquiring furniture, and much more.
But what will really make this feel like an office is not the furniture or the Internet, but the people. Linda Langkow has begun serving as our volunteer office manager 20 hours per week. She has been invaluable during this move. Our new program manager, Melissa Bowe, starts April 22. And we will be welcoming our summer intern Colleen Able, loaned to us for two months by Florida JFON, beginning June 3.
The new office space is large enough that we can grow into it. We seek to foster a culture of volunteer engagement at the National JFON office, just as we do at all of our 15 JFON affiliate sites around the country. As we initiate more in-depth support to JFON sites, we will be mindful of how volunteers can be involved from the national office.
Come visit if you’re in the area!
